How to Get Your Business Found on Google in Sydney

A practical, plain-English guide for Sydney small businesses: Google Business Profile, local SEO basics, reviews and the quick wins that help customers find you.

By Newey Marketing6 min read

When someone in Sydney needs a plumber, a hairdresser or a café, the first thing most of them do is pick up their phone and search. If your business doesn't show up in those results, that customer goes to a competitor who does.

The good news is that getting found on Google isn't magic. For most local businesses, a handful of basics make the biggest difference. Here's where to start.

1. Set up and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Google Maps and in the map results at the top of local searches. For many local businesses it brings in more calls than the website does.

  • Claim and verify your profile at google.com/business.
  • Choose the right primary category. It's one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear in.
  • Fill in everything: opening hours, service areas, services, phone number, website and a clear description of what you do.
  • Add real photos of your work, your team and your premises, and keep adding new ones.

2. Keep your business details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be exactly the same on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Instagram and any directories you're listed on. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google, and for AI search tools, to trust that the information is correct.

3. Make your website clear about what you do and where

Google needs to understand your services and your location. Customers do too.

  • Use page titles and headings that say what you do and where, for example "Emergency Plumber in the Inner West, Sydney".
  • Give each main service its own page, with real detail about what's included.
  • Mention the suburbs and areas you actually serve.
  • Make sure the site loads quickly and works well on mobile. Most local searches happen on phones.

4. Ask for reviews, and reply to them

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people click on you. Make asking part of your routine: send a short message with your review link after each job. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly. It shows future customers that you care.

Quick win: create a short link to your Google review form and add it to your invoices, email signature and receipts.

5. Answer the questions your customers actually ask

Think about the questions you hear every week: prices, timeframes, what's included, which suburbs you cover. Answer them on your website with a short FAQ section or a helpful article. This content helps you appear in more searches and it's exactly the kind of information AI assistants look for when they recommend local businesses.

6. Prepare for AI search

More people now ask tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI results for recommendations. These tools pull from the same signals: clear website content, consistent business details, reviews and well-structured information. Getting your SEO foundations right is the best way to be ready for AI search too.

How long does it take?

Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Website SEO usually takes a few months to build momentum, especially in competitive Sydney markets. If you need enquiries straight away, Google Ads can bring in customers while your SEO grows.
